19th Century Biedermeier Nutwood Mirror Egg and Dart Design, Austria, circa 1820

About the Item

Fantastic early 19th century wall mirror from the famous Biedermeier period in Vienna/Austria around 1820. Featuring an overlapping inserted substructure made of spruce, the massive, deeply grooved frame shows an amazing set walnut veneered surface and is additionally adorned by broad, beautifully carved so-called "egg and dart" bars (also known as "bull’s or ox eye") as well as great designed narrow stripes on the inside. These are covered with gold leaf showing a very charming old patina - you can even see the red "Bolus" shining through. ("Bolus" is the red shining primer for the gold leaf technique). This valuable antique wall mirror was sealed by a traditional hand polished shellac finish. On the backside you have a hand forged ring that makes wall mounting easy. Rebate measurement: W 20.47". H 31.90".
