Jean Dubuffet Partitions 1980-1981 / Psycho-Sites Puzzle and Exhibition Catalog

About the Item

Jean Dubuffet jigsaw puzzle announcement and exhibition catalog from the Pace Gallery, New York. Produced in conjunction with the Partitions / Psycho-Sites exhibit which ran from December 1982 to January 1983. This rare piece is exceptionally special as it is paired with the catalog and still in original shrink wrapping. From the introduction by Carter Ratcliff : “Some artists are inclusive. Others try to leave out as much as possible. Obviously, outrageously, Jean Dubuffet is of the former type. In four decades of steady production (before 1942, Dubuffet was an on-again-off-again artist), he has filled his paintings and prints, his collage and sculpture with a shocking variety of textures, images, allusions. Dubuffet has offered passages of paint so heavy with sand they look like slabs of earth. And he evoked the unearthly in certain flourishes of the Hourloupe series. His art feels exhaustive. In jettisoning modernist high style for a manner as immediate as grafitti, Dubuffet turned his art into an insatiable catalog, a taxonomy of the basic forms that meaning assumes when it agrees to make itself visible. Yet not even Jean Dubuffet can be all-inclusive. He must, for example, leave out those pristine angularities that occupy the art of Kasimir Malevich, Mondrian and de Stijl, and the Minimalists. Of course. What place would a Minimalist grid have in Dubuffet's frantically layered Thé âtres de mémoires (1976) or in these new works, the Psycho-Sites (1981) and the Partitions (1980-81)? A partition is an architectural form. If they are to stand, such forms must be rational. An ideal of anti-architecture must have guided Dubuffet through the Partitions series. These pictures flirt with order only to mock it. They entice rationality, capture it, then condemn it to long, difficult servitude in regions of possibility the mind is loathe to acknowledge…” 26 page with die-cut band to hold the puzzle announcement. Measures 7” by 8.75”.
