“Piumino” Club Chair by De Pas, D’urbino & Lomazzi for Dell’Oca, Italy 1970s

About the Item

This “Piumino” chair is an outstanding model by the Milanese architect trio, known world-wide for their enlarged ingenious works. The shape and sheer size are the most eye-catching elements, but thanks to the architectural know-how of the designers, the construction of the chair does not fall short either. The chair is moulded out of foam and covered with folded, soft cognac leather. The foam and leather materials guarantee extreme sitting comfort. Unlike the trio’s iconic “Joe Sofa” (shaped like a baseball glove), the “Piumino” avoids looking kitschy despite its exaggerated size and design. De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi were part of the ‘Radical Design’ movement, which dominated Avant Garde Italian design and architecture in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This impressive club chair design was created in this period, which brought the long-lasting success of the designers. De Pas, D’Urbino & Lomazzi designed this cognac leather piece for the Italian manufacturer Dell'Oca in the 1970s. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Item has some small marks and scratches, some small leather damage fitting with the age and the ‘rough’ appearance of the item. • Italian Upholstered Chairs with Tubular Metal, Italy, ca 1970s

Throughout the 20th century, Italian design managed to distinguish itself. The 1970s were a boom time in Italy especially, a decade of mass production and innovation that signalled the end of the post-war rebuilding programme. Still, one off designs and the overflow of creativity were just as present, giving birth to outstanding pieces such as this pair of chairs. Following the economic boom of the 1950s, the motto “design dictates, users follow” was the matrix of mass consumption society in Italy. Against this idea, the artists, and designers of the coming decades defended a conception of design as an ecosystem that stressed the notion of play within everyday life. As a result, now iconic design were created, such as Adriano Piazzesi’s similar armchair, the “Sacco Bean Bag Chair” by Piero Gatti...

  • Italian Bamboo Lounge Chairs with Upholstered Cushions, Italy, 1970s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The 1970s were a boom time in Italy, a decade of mass production and innovation when designers made huge quantities of furniture and sold it through department stores. As a result, exceptional pieces from the 1970s are in short supply. Most are still in Italy, with exceptions like these bamboo lounge chairs. With their fresh colours and shiny surfaces, pieces from the 1970s are very appealing and photogenic. During the 20th century, bamboo enjoyed a few resurgences of popularity as it has always conjured up feelings of travel and pleasure. These lounge chairs are all that and more: they showcase a precision that was unachievable by methods of mass production, therefore there is the charm and quality that handcrafted pieces possess. This is most apparent in the arms with a dynamic, flowing curve. Each of the seven pieces stems from the same spot at the top, gradually increasing in size to form the armrests. The backs are also formed from individual pieces of bamboo, bent at their “hip” to create the reclined position of the backs. To enhance the sense of relaxed lounging, the chairs sit very low with two cushions comprising the seats. The upper seat and back cushions are upholstered in a floral, patterned fabric that further add to the cosy impression. Bamboo’s ability to be both delicate and ornate, as well as bohemian and relaxed means that it fits into a host of different types of interiors. Italian furniture managed to preserve the uniqueness of handmade pieces well into the 20th century. Bamboo has a place in almost every setting, traditional or modern, as it is a grounding force that makes everything feel a bit more at ease. It was a popular choice for casual '70s décor...
