Italian Upholstered Chairs with Tubular Metal, Italy, ca 1970s

About the Item

Throughout the 20th century, Italian design managed to distinguish itself. The 1970s were a boom time in Italy especially, a decade of mass production and innovation that signalled the end of the post-war rebuilding programme. Still, one off designs and the overflow of creativity were just as present, giving birth to outstanding pieces such as this pair of chairs. Following the economic boom of the 1950s, the motto “design dictates, users follow” was the matrix of mass consumption society in Italy. Against this idea, the artists, and designers of the coming decades defended a conception of design as an ecosystem that stressed the notion of play within everyday life. As a result, now iconic design were created, such as Adriano Piazzesi’s similar armchair, the “Sacco Bean Bag Chair” by Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro in 1968, and Joe Colombo’s “Tube Chair”. These upholstered chairs are much in the vein of these models, showcasing a break from the strictly functional, often rigid forms of the era. The defining feature of this model is the large upholstered body with a structure in chromed tubular metal and wood. The design expresses stylish playfulness and comfort by using a whole bundle of fabric held by the single line of chromed tube. It sinks into the fabric effortlessly, while providing contrast both in material and colour. The chairs’ aesthetic is further enriched by the ruching on the sides and the tufted buttons, both on the front and the back of the back rests. The legs showcase the beautiful wood the structures are made of. Their rounded shape complements the overall gently rounded impression of the design. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the 1970s are repeatedly having something of a moment in the style world. Not necessarily the various shades of brown floral wallpaper, avocado bathrooms and woodchip, but more the exceptional furniture pieces like these individualistic chairs. • Italian Bamboo Lounge Chairs with Upholstered Cushions, Italy, 1970s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The 1970s were a boom time in Italy, a decade of mass production and innovation when designers made huge quantities of furniture and sold it through department stores. As a result, exceptional pieces from the 1970s are in short supply. Most are still in Italy, with exceptions like these bamboo lounge chairs. With their fresh colours and shiny surfaces, pieces from the 1970s are very appealing and photogenic. During the 20th century, bamboo enjoyed a few resurgences of popularity as it has always conjured up feelings of travel and pleasure. These lounge chairs are all that and more: they showcase a precision that was unachievable by methods of mass production, therefore there is the charm and quality that handcrafted pieces possess. This is most apparent in the arms with a dynamic, flowing curve. Each of the seven pieces stems from the same spot at the top, gradually increasing in size to form the armrests. The backs are also formed from individual pieces of bamboo, bent at their “hip” to create the reclined position of the backs. To enhance the sense of relaxed lounging, the chairs sit very low with two cushions comprising the seats. The upper seat and back cushions are upholstered in a floral, patterned fabric that further add to the cosy impression. Bamboo’s ability to be both delicate and ornate, as well as bohemian and relaxed means that it fits into a host of different types of interiors. Italian furniture managed to preserve the uniqueness of handmade pieces well into the 20th century. Bamboo has a place in almost every setting, traditional or modern, as it is a grounding force that makes everything feel a bit more at ease. It was a popular choice for casual '70s décor...
