As a young boy, he took night classes at the National Academy of Design, and first exhibited his work there in 1861. The first years of his career were spent as an engraver at the American Bank-Note Company, while at the same time attempting to establish himself as a painter. He later moved to Chicago, where he continued to work as an banknote engraver and also taught art at the Chicago Academy of Design. In 1870, at the relatively late age of thirty-two, Shirlaw travelled to Europe to study. Prevented from settling in Paris by the Franco-Prussian War, he instead studied in Munich, where he joined the small group of American painters working in the city, including Frank Duveneck and William Merrit Chase...

Sublime Expressionist Blue White and Teal Village Landscape Painting with Boat
By Edvard Munch
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Incredible texture is achieved in this vintage 1972 original, signed painting. The image depicts and ethereal scene along a shoreline. A solitary figure, presumably female, stands gazing at a group of humble homes. Dressed in white with her head shrouded, she stands holding a basket while she looks quietly ahead. One wonders what she is thinking. Is she gazing with a sense of longing? Is she coming or going? She doesn't seem to be poised for action, rather contemplating her next move. The village seems semi-rural. Power lines...

Albert Handell Pastel on Paper of Reclining Nude Reading, 1971
Located in Garnerville, NY
A fine pastel on paper of a female nude reclining with a book on a Victorian sofa by Albert Handell (1937-). Signed and dated in red lower right, Handell, 71. A very cozy theme with a raking artist's angled perspective. The work on paper has not been viewed out of the frame. Good overall condition with no visible rips, tears or foxing. The framing treatment consists of a simple dark wood molding, fillet with the work on paper under glass. The approximate overall dimensions with the frame are 33.75" wide x 1.5" deep x 25.75" high. The approximate sight dimensions are 27.5" wide x 19.75 high. AskArt bio: Coming to Santa Fe from Brooklyn in 1985, he was taken with the light and the colors of the Southwest landscape. He loves to paint sky, adobe structures, and trees. He also travels throughout the country giving workshops. His heritage is Russian Jewish and Polish. In 1916, his father emigrated from the Ukraine to New York where he met his Polish wife. Trained in New York City and Paris, Albert attended the Art Students League for three and a half years, and his most influential teacher was Frank Mason. He discovered his great love was painting outdoors, especially old woods and streams in the Catskill Mountains. A 1980 trip to Santa Fe was life-changing, and he moved there in the mid-80s, trading the subject matter of dark woods for brilliant colored landscape. In style, he followed in the footsteps of artists he most admired--Edouard Vuillard and Joaquin Sorolla. His studio is a renovated two-car garage...

Coveted Ben Shahn Limited Edition Portfolio #234 with 24 Lithographs R. M. Rilke
By Ben Shahn
Located in West Hartford, CT
Coveted portfolio containing 24 original lithographs by Ben Shahn in one of an edition of 950 with the one being numbered 234, see pics. Signed by the artist at front as shown in pics attached. Copyright 1968. Portfolio is complete with nothing missing and still in very good condition - see pics. Accompanied by the poet Ranier Maria Rilke - see pics. Ben Shahn (American, September 12, 1898 - March 14, 1969) was a painter, lithographer, and photographer best known for his left-wing political leanings, works of social realism, and The Shape of Content, a publication of his lectures. Shahn was born in Kovno, Lithuania, when the country was still occupied by the Russian Empire. In 1902, Shahn's father, Joshua Hessel, was exiled to Siberia. Shahn then moved to Vilkomir, Lithuania, with his mother, Gittel, and his two siblings. Their family moved to the United States in 1906 to join their father who had fled from exile. After settling in Brooklyn, NY, Shahn began to train in lithography and graphic design, and his favorite medium was egg tempera. In 1919, Shahn enrolled in New York University to study Biology before entering the City College in 1921 to study Art. He also studied Art at the National Academy of Design. In the 1920s, Shahn and his wife traveled around Africa and Europe to study the works of renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881- 1973) and Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953). In 1933, Shahn worked as an assistant of Diego Rivera (Mexican, 1886 - 1957); at this time, Rivera was working on the mural at the Rockefeller Center in New York. Two years later, Shahn was recommended by Walker Evans (American, 1903 - 1975) to join the Farm Security Administration photographic group. One of the artist’s most famous works is the fresco mural he did for the Jersey Homesteads' community center. Shahn also worked on murals for the state on the Federal Security Building and the Bronx Central Annex Post Office. During the Second World War, Shahn made a series of paintings laced...

Hopper Drawing by and inscribed by Carter E Foster to Herbert Kasper, 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Hopper Drawing by Carter E Foster. 2013, Whitney Museum of American Art. 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, from May 23 to October 6, 2013. The exhibition then traveled to Dallas and finally to the Walker Art Center in 2014. The book was owned by Herbert Kasper and inscribed by the author to him. Herbert Kasper was an American fashion designer known as Kasper. He studied English and advertising at New York University and fashion at the Parsons School of Design in New York from 1951–53 and l'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1953. He left NYU to serve in the US Army in Europe. After World War II he enrolled at Parsons, where he became a protégé of milliner Fred Frederics. After graduating, he returned to Paris for two years developing his skills in design while working for Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, and Marcel Rochas. When he returned to the US, he worked for Frederics at Mr. John. He was an avid art collector, and in 2011, the Morgan Library and Museum devoted an exhibition, called “Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs,” to the designer. Hopper Drawing is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (1882–1967). More than anything else, Hopper's drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artist's work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifs--the street, the movie theatre, the office, the bedroom, the road—that he would return to throughout his career as an artist. This exhibition showcases the Whitney's unparalleled collection of Hopper's work, which includes over 2,500 drawings bequeathed to the museum by his widow Josephine Hopper...
