17th Century St. Joseph Painting Oil on Canvas by Circle of Cantarini

About the Item

Circle of Simone Cantarini known as the Pesarese (Pesaro, 1612 - Verona, 1648) St. Joseph Oil on canvas, 62 x 48 cm Frame 80 x 64 cm The stylistic and compositional features of the canvas in question allow us to refer it to the hand of a painter from the circle of Simone Cantarini (1612 - 1648) called the Pesaro. His training began in Pesaro, his hometown, under the guidance of Giovanni Giacomo Pandolfi (1567 - 1636). The commission of the Pala Olivieri to Guido Reni introduced Renian painting to Pesaro and Cantarini; this prompted him to move to Bologna and enter the great master's workshop. Painter and man with an impetuous character, he was much appreciated by the master for his pictorial qualities, despite the clashes that also took place in public between the two. This impetuous character is also reflected in his painting, as in the canvas in question, where the classicism of Renian ancestry meets different influences, from Caravaggesque naturalism, to the expressive force typical of his painting and style. Later he was also active in Rome, Mantua and Verona, the city where he died at the age of thirty-six. In this beautiful depiction of Saint Joseph all the strength and quality of his painting emerges, capable of combining the Renian and Bolognese classicism with the expressive power typical of his character and his painting. The brushstroke proves to be skilled in the search for detail, where the single stroke of the brush is defined with such care that it is at the same time a single element and part of the whole. In this regard, observe the vibrant and analytical rendering of the beard and hair locks. In the slightly reclined face, in the slight wrinkles, in the absorbed and severe gaze, we can trace the profound research and ability to define, not only the figure but also the personality of Saint Joseph.

The need to translate the Passion into images aimed to raise awareness of the forgiveness that has occurred for all men, consequent to the Crucifixion. This painting depicts the moment before the audience before Pilate. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, despite the fact that he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple...
