20th Century Mountain View Painting Tempera on Cardboard by Piero Leidi

About the Item

Piero Leidi (Brescia, 1892 - Bedizzole, 1976) Mountain view with Ponte di Legno Tempera on cardboard, 23 x 17 cm Signed lower right "P.Leidi", dated 1943 and inscribed on the back Piero Leidi, an artist of Brescia origins, studied in Lugano with Luigi Rossi (1852-1923), a staunch supporter of en plein air painting until the 1880s; Rossi rekindled in Leidi the dedication to mountain views, never abandoned even when the artist continued his studies at the Academy of Florence. Simultaneously with the Florentine lessons, Leidi enrolled in the Brescia school of Moretto painting, already in 1913 receiving the first prizes for the realistic ability to return the landscape data. Its exhibition activity was limited to the first decades of the twentieth century, in particular to the documented participations in exhibitions in Milan, Turin, Cremona, Genoa, Venice and Brescia within the Group of Independent Artists. The increase in prestige allowed the artist to also participate in foreign exhibitions, The present landscape beautifully brings together all the characteristics of Leyden's painting: a crystalline colorism pervades the entire composition, punctuated by liquid brushstrokes that define solid volumes, in a silent rendering of a snapshot of life. The evanescent touches with which the artist patiently distinguishes the window frames and wood together with the heaps of bricks that build a distant low wall are in harmony with the subtle shadow cut between the parking houses and which seems to cool the grass. In the painting it is possible to identify a glimpse of Ponte di Legno, a Brescia municipality representative of the artist's production. The formal lyricism that springs from the particular point of view, conferring a state of grace on the noble poverty of the place, is reminiscent of the socialist realism in which Leidi participated in the adoption of these particular subjects, of silent contemplation. These views can be combined with various charcoal drawings depicting workers and peasants, based on the contemporary experiences of Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Francesco Filippini.

  • 17th Century Penitent Magdalene Painting Tempera on Parchment by Genovese

Giovanni Battista Castello, known as "Il Genovese" (1547-1637) Penitent Magdalene Tempera on parchment, 21 x 17 cm Frame 26 x 22 cm The precious tempera painting on parchment is to be referred to the hand of the painter Giovanni Battista Castello (1547-1637), called “il Genovese” to distinguish him from the homonymous contemporary, architect and painter, called “il Bergamasco”. Older brother of Bernardo, a famous painter of late Ligurian Mannerism, he began his activity in the field of religious goldsmithing, to which he soon joined the art of miniature, an art to which he ended up dedicating himself completely and with greater satisfaction, bringing it back to a success and to a disclosure that he had not known since the Middle Ages and which now found incentive and justification in the spiritual and cultural climate of the Counter-Reformation. In the sources he is cited as self-taught; However, his assiduous frequentation of Luca Cambiaso...
