20th Century Venice Painting Tempera on Canvas by Armando Santi

About the Item

Armando Santi (1925 - 2015) Venice Tempera on canvas, 87 x 77 cm Frame 105.5 x 95.5 cm Signed lower left: A. Santi "A pulsating, incisive, dynamic painting, sometimes as strong as a punch in the stomach, but nevertheless intense and communicative, capable of surprising and asking questions." The canvas in question is the work of Armando Santi, one of the most beloved protagonists of figurative painting of the twentieth century. Originally from Tuscany, precisely from Volterra, a place whose accent he will always maintain, after having trained at the Volterra School of Art and the Academy of Florence, he moved to Biella, where he remained until his death. Here he taught for a long time at the city art school. His art documents ever-changing research and extremely vital writing. Intense, communicative and pulsating, his works are characterized by great incisiveness, the result of a decisive sign capable of translating rapid intuition into a series of vibrant and energetic images. His artistic career has undergone continuous evolutions: from the first academic drawings, to Mondine, oil on canvas that won the competition of the Ente Risi di Vercelli in 1649, from the Futurist paintings with geometric spaces and moving figures, to the suggestive nocturnal of the Madonna of Oropa, up to the large canvases of social theme, with dark tones and dark with some red touches. Around '68, in the midst of social protests, he creates strong compositions, like malnourished children, of a raw drama, perhaps a reminder of the painter's experience, during his adolescence, in a Polish concentration camp. To then arrive at a canvas like the one presented here, with the most laughing and ringing palette, dedicated to the beauty of Venice, a widespread subject in the painter's production, we recall those dedicated to the carnival. The Don Quixote series is well known. In dark and dark tones with some red touches. The Don Quixote series is well known. In 2015 the city of Biella dedicated a large exhibition to the painter, to remember and celebrate his 70 years of activity. The painting depicts a view of the Grand Canal. You can recognize the two bell towers and the two large domes of the church of Santa Maria della Salute, near the Punta della Dogana. The foreshortening is rendered with rapid and pounding brushstrokes of different shades of blue and gray, which return a chiaroscuro and full of mystery atmosphere.

  • 17th Century Penitent Magdalene Painting Tempera on Parchment by Genovese
    By Giovanni Battista Castello
    Located in Milan, IT
Giovanni Battista Castello, known as "Il Genovese" (1547-1637) Penitent Magdalene Tempera on parchment, 21 x 17 cm Frame 26 x 22 cm The precious tempera painting on parchment is to be referred to the hand of the painter Giovanni Battista Castello (1547-1637), called “il Genovese” to distinguish him from the homonymous contemporary, architect and painter, called “il Bergamasco”. Older brother of Bernardo, a famous painter of late Ligurian Mannerism, he began his activity in the field of religious goldsmithing, to which he soon joined the art of miniature, an art to which he ended up dedicating himself completely and with greater satisfaction, bringing it back to a success and to a disclosure that he had not known since the Middle Ages and which now found incentive and justification in the spiritual and cultural climate of the Counter-Reformation. In the sources he is cited as self-taught; However, his assiduous frequentation of Luca Cambiaso...

  • 20th Century Italian Acrylic Abstract Urban Expressionist Painting on Canvas
    By Andrea Spinelli
    Located in Firenze, IT
The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities. The geometric lines are overlaid with jagged lines, overlaps and color dripping and also the choice in the color palette, with different shades of white, gray, rose, orange red and blue helps in rendering the result of the tears and ripped paper. The result is a beautiful multicolored modern abstract canvas, both aesthetically and ethically, with many rich layers of color, texture and expression in which the artist leaves his own message. The painting is housed in a simple modern white lacquer wood frame. Andrea Spinelli...
