"Delos, " Masterpiece Painting of Female Nude by Joseph Mellor Hanson

About the Item

Perhaps set on or inspired by the gorgeous, sun-bleached island of Delos in Greece, this 1954 painting by Joseph Hanson -- the British-American figural painter -- depicts a kneeling female nude, her head turned away and her hands clasped, all in gorgeous shades of rich brown, deep yellow and purplish blue. Not unlike Francis Bacon in subsequent decades, Hanson was known for abstracted, almost Moderne nudes that dissolved around the edges, and includes an overlay of geometric lines and circles that suggested an underlying mathematical form to warm, human flesh. The painting was exhibited at the Passedoit Gallery in New York City, managed by Georgette Passedoit, which was known for showing modern, boundary-pushing artists in the 1940s and 1950s. The medium is oil on canvas. Dimensions include frame.

  • "Satyr and Nymph", Art Deco Masterpiece Painting with Nudes in Paradise, 1932
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most sensual and brilliant Art Deco paintings in the French manner that we have ever offered, this idyllic scene of Satyr and Nymph, lounging under a fruited tree with lush fields in the distance, was painted by Gheorghe Labin in 1932. Labin was one of Romania's avant-garde artists in the 1920s and 1930s, and clearly he trained in Paris, because the lush scene, brilliant palette, and confident brush strokes indicate an intimate familiarity with the leading painters associated with what we now call Art Deco. This painting was entered into the Salon Bucarest in 1932, in a period when Labin exhibited with Mattis Teutsch, the de facto leader of Romania's modern painters, together with Corneliu Baba...

  • "Five Josephs, " Important Art Deco Painting w/ Male Nudes, Provincetown, 1930s
    By William L'Engle
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
An extraordinary example of Art Deco painting with allegorical meaning -- like so many murals painted in the 1920s and 1930s -- this large work by William L'Engle depicts five nude male figures laboring in the field, symbolizing life in Provincetown, Massachusetts. A Black male figure in the foreground is planting crops, while two other figures in the distance are pulling a rope, perhaps alluding to fishing boats tied up at the dock, while another nude seems to be sinking into sleep beneath a pier -- all with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the background. L'Engle called this "The Five Josephs," perhaps referring to Joseph of Arimathea and other figures in the New Testament. William L'Engle was a towering figure in the Provincetown art colony, and was extremely well connected with America's artistic elite, starting with his trip to Europe as a young man with Waldo Pierce and George Biddle. Over time, William and his life Lucy became close to a wide range of important figures in painting, theater and the arts, including Charles Hawthorne, Eugene O'Neill, Gerrit Beneker, John Dos Passos, Edmund Wilson and Mary McCarthy, William and Marguerite Zorach, Edna St. Vincent-Millay, Charles Demuth, Childe Hassam, George Biddle, Edwin Dickinson...
