About the Item
Inspired by "Kublai Khan," the famed Romantic poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and one of a series painted by Milton Bond dating from the 1940s and 1950s, this depiction of a nude youth flanked by two other nude figures is a masterpiece of Art Deco merged with a vivid Surrealism. Bond was an important painter who worked for the Munsell Color Company and developed a system to describe colors on a scientific scale. Later he taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and became fascinated with carborundum crystals, introducing them in a stylized, vividly-colored form to his paintings. This painting uses them as a kind of architectural context for his nude figures, drenching them in gorgeous blues, pale pinks and greens. Measures: 42-inch.
