"Garden and Spindle, " Pair of Art Deco Paintings Celebrating the Swedish Home
About the Item
Painted by one of the greatest artists of the Swedish Grace movement -- Simon Gate, best known for his spectacular series of engraved glass designs for Orrefors in Sweden -- this pair of paintings depicts a young man with a spade in his garden, and a young woman with her spinning tools, all executed in jewel tones of sapphire, ruby and emerald. Gate's paintings are very rare, and in this case he painted this pair for a series of posters and/or postcards that celebrated the traditional folk arts and gardens of Swedish families. The details of each figure's face and hands are very fine, much like the attention he gave to each engraved piece for Orrefors. The paintings are gouache on card stock.
