Embroidered muslin shawl in Chikan Work - Lucknow India for export Circa 1810

About the Item

Circa 1800-1825 Lucknow India for European fashion Long stole shawl in white embroidery on cotton muslin known as Chikan Work, originating from the town of Lucknow - Uttar Pradesh in India. This type of highly refined embroidery was exported to Europe by the British India Companies. The fashion for summer shawls corresponded to the fashion under Napoleon 1er in France and to Regency fashion in England. The composition of the design is based on the same criteria as Indian cashmere shawls, with five cashmere palm botehs at the ends, framed by fine hemstitch embroidered borders (pulled threads). This stole comes from the collection of Cristina Barreto Lancaster, which sold in London in February 2025. It has undergone a meticulous professional restoration in Italy, lined with silk crepeline and hand-stopped and consolidated (see last two photos). This exemplary restoration is only visible to the naked eye with great care. Overall stable condition. Portable and easy to handle. Dimensions: 280 xm x 87 cm.
