About the Item

A truly breathtaking and museum quality Banani attributed metallic gold lamé embroidered velvet coat dating back to the 1928-29 time period. Babani, founded in Paris in 1894 by Vitaldi Babani, was a fashion house based on the Boulevard Haussmann specializing in imported exotic goods and from the 1910's onwards, original garments inspired by their imported merchandise. Maurice Babani's designs tended to be explicitly based upon their sources, such as a dress reproducing a North African embroidered robe, but using silk velvet rather than the woolen textile of the original. Most notable client is Katharine Hepburn who chose to wear a white crushed velvet Babani dress with antique gold embroidery for her wedding to Ludlow Ogden Smith. This gorgeous Babani embroidered dusty lilac silk velvet coat is an extraordinary wearable example of 1920's beauty and a special find for the serious collector. The unique unstructured style is strikingly modern yet the abundance of hand done embroidered metallic threaded workmanship is a treasure trove of antique needle art. Just look at the stunning block color ruched collar! The elegant yellow silk lining pairs so flawlessly with the metallic gold embroidery.
