About

This is an iconic dress and coat combination by Stephen Sprouse, dating 1988 Fall/ Winter collection. This is a piece from Keith Haring and Sprouse fabric design collaboration.
The pair consists of a knee-length knit shift dress and jewel-necked, single-breasted swing coat. The coat is printed inside and out, with equally bold prints on each side. Both the dress and the inside of the coat are printed with a bright modern art print, in which a biblical scene has been rendered in Harings graphics with bold orange graffiti across it. Sprouse was known for working with Keith Haring and being one of few designers allowed to use the legendary artist's work in his clothing. The strong, pop-art colours are balanced by the sketchy lines of the images, creating a high art print with graphic appeal. The collision of traditional religious iconography with the colours and shapes of 20th century popular culture is also a striking one, and this contradiction is presented unapologetically in bright shades on an all-over, unmissable design. The outside of the coat, meanwhile, is yellow with abstract lines snaking over it in red in the style of Keith Harring. This abstract pattern complements the graphic print well, echoing the orange lines in the latter without matching too closely. The long-sleeved shift dress is versatile, comfortable, and easy to wear, and the coat is the quintessential statement piece. This is a wonderful set for the stylish, bold, and art-conscious woman.
