1960’s Pierre Cardin Micro Pleated Silk Trapeze Dress

Pierre Cardin has enjoyed a storied career in fashion design starting with his work for Schiaparelli and Christian Dior in the 1940's and continuing under his own label in the 1950's. His space age collections of the 1960's remain his greatest impact on fashion history. This amazing silk dress has a sophisticated mod aesthetic with a definitive nod to the future. The double layered trapeze silhouette is enhanced by micro pleats dropping from the bust with the neck and hem anchored by fabric tubing. The gentle pooling of the sleeves at the snap cuff and the sneak peek of the under dress hem provide a sweet feminine characteristic which conjures up visions of Twiggy or Mia Farrow complete with a pixie hairdo. The dress zips and hooks at the back and the fabric is a vanilla color with the slightest hint of celery green ... indeed the lining of the under dress is decidedly celery green in tint. CONDITION Though amazing and an important design from an iconic name, the dress has age related spotting and would be best for a collector or those that do not mind imperfections in their vintage clothing. Many of the seams were loose and have been professionally restored. There is a faint spot on the upper bodice shown in photograph 15. There are a series of spots in the micro pleating just below the bodice as shown in photograph 16 and to some extent they are camouflaged by the micro pleats. There is a spot at the back upper bodice and a series of spots at the back of the left sleeve as shown in photographs 17 and 18. There is also staining on the lining of the under dress at waist as shown in photograph 7 ... this cannot be seen on the outside of the dress. It has been professionally cleaned and is ready for wear or display. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The size is not marked though the dress best fits a size 2 and might also work for a size 4 with attention to the following measurements. The dress is particularly small through the shoulder and upper arms. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4 and the dress was a bit small through the fitted shoulders. Bust 33” Across the Top of the Bodice from Sleeve Seam to Seam 12.5” Waist (measurement taken at under dress) 32” Hips (measurement taken at under dress) 36” Sleeve From Underarm to Cuff 18” Shoulder Length Taken Across Back From Sleeve Seam to Seam 14.5” Length From Shoulder to Under Dress Hem 34.75” Length From Shoulder to Micro Pleat Hem 33.25”

About Pierre Cardin (Manufacturer)

Best known for creating groundbreaking fashion designs from the 1950s onward, Pierre Cardin has enjoyed great success in other design fields, most notably furniture. Cardin’s chairs, cabinets, tables and other pieces share many of the keynotes of his clothing designs. They are simple, geometric, elegant and cool.

Cardin was born in a village near Venice, Italy, and raised in central France. Always interested in fashion, he left home at age 17 to train with a Vichy tailor. After the end of World War II, Cardin moved to Paris and worked for a succession of couture houses, before taking a job with Christian Dior in 1946. Cardin went solo in 1950, and quickly won attention for his novel style. Unlike Dior’s famous New Look, Cardin’s clothes de-emphasized a woman’s curves; his breakthrough pieces like the Bubble dress had, instead, a sculptural quality. In the following decade, Cardin introduced bright tunic dresses and shifts, marketed as the Space Age look and accessorized with vinyl hats and visors.

In the 1970s Cardin expanded his design work into furniture, jewelry and automobiles. (Later, licensing agreements would put Cardin’s name on goods ranging from perfume to sunglasses.) Cardin’s furniture pieces — inspired, perhaps, by the rediscovery of Art Deco design in that decade — feature simple, symmetrical forms, lacquer and figured veneer finishes, and accents in metals such as aluminum and brass. Whether you are looking for a vintage cocktail dress or a chest of drawers to keep it in, as you will see from these pages, Pierre Cardin offers an option in either that is timelessly chic.
