Stephen Burrows Black Chiffon and Taffeta Bubble Hem Dress

About the Item

Stephen Burrows is an American fashion designer based in New York City, known for being one of the first African-American fashion designers to sell internationally and develop a mainstream, high-fashion clientele. His garments, known for their bright colors and "lettuce hem" curly-edges, became an integral part of the disco-dancing scene of the 1970s. Burrows was one of the five American designers to show at the iconic Versailles battle in 1973 when the Americans went up against the French couturiers. Throughout his career has been awarded 3 Cody awards. Stephen Burrows’ take on a LBD! Gathered silk chiffon straps rise from the black “clam shell” bustier which is padded and covered in chiffon shirring and outlined in ruffles. The body of the dress is made from stretchy matte black jersey and serves as a blank slate for a cluster of funky multi-color taffeta and metallic leather abstract shapes. Please note that each shape is a different color, talk about attention to detail! The bubble hem is reminiscent of a 1950’s little black dress. Invisible zipper in the back. Label reads size “6”, includes white sample tag. Materials: Matte Jersey, silk chiffon, taffeta, metallic leather. Size: 6 (has some give due to the stretchy nature of fabric) Measurements: Bust: 32” Hip: Free Length: 29” Condition: Excellent
