About the Item

Hattie Carnegie was a one woman fashion revolution!!! She reinvented fashion as it was known in the US, beginning in 1909 when she and a friend opened a tiny hat shop until her death in 1956, women's wear would never be the same...The years between saw a design empire that encompassed custom designed clothing, ready to wear, jewelry, handbags, cosmetics, everything but shoes, Carnegie, who couldn't sew, would convey her designs to cutters and sewers who executed her wishes...She built a fashion empire, in 1929 she did $3,500,000. in business! One of Carnegie’s most important legacies to American fashion was the start she gave to emerging designers beginning with Norman Norell in 1928, a long and impressive list of designers include Claire McCardell, Jean Louis, Gus Tassell, James Galanos, Travis Banton, Pauline de Rothschild and Pauline Trigere. From the early 1950s a black silk dress and jacket...The fitted waist jacket has a unique collar that is set below the neckline at each side and has a playful touch with the addition of working bound buttonholes which are merely decoration...Button front jacket with 3/4 length sleeves that feature turn back cuffs, fitted shape with couture details through out, the jacket is fully interlined with padding and hand finished silk lining...The matching dress is tailored to perfection with extended shoulder line, deep open neckline and shaped decollete, seamed waist to center front full length panels...The dress closes at the back with a metal zipper, dress is interlined in silk organza with pinked seams throughout, the hem has been taken up at some time approx. 1", some of the seams have been reinforced...The jacket is fully lined in pale blue silk...Both pieces in very good condition... In excellent wearable condition... All our clothing is dry cleaned and inspected for condition and is ready to wear...Any condition issues will be noted...For visual comparison our mannequin is a size 4 Measurements are: Jacket Bust 40" Waist 30" Hip 40" Shoulder back 16" Sleeve length 21" Center neck back to hem back 23 1/4" Dress Bust 40" Waist 30" Hip 40" Center neck back to hem back 41 1/2"
