Schiaparelli-Inspired Sapphire Silk Velvet Bead and Pearl Pencil Suit - S, 1940s
About the Item
Although it bears no label, this suit betrays all the hallmarks of a Schiaparelli master work: saturated color, silk velvet fabric (her favorite), sharp shoulders paired with curving lapels, and most importantly, artisanal beading. Clearly inspired by Schiaparelli's designs, its shape and motif are strikingly similar to her 1938 Zodiac collection, a single piece of which recently sold for over £130,000.
Dramatically sculpted peplum jacket with multiple princess seams front and back; scalloped lapel and velvet-covered button closure. Heavily padded shoulders with ornately beaded vines from shoulder to bust; unlined but backed with heavy silk faille for extra body around peplum. Pencil skirt with side metal zipper closure, top hook and eye and rear kick pleat; unlined.
