Couture 1980s Castelbajac TuxedoSequin BiasCut Cashmere AsymmetricOversized Knit

About the Item

Uniquely designed as couture by French Jean Charles de Castelbajac in the 1980s in Paris, this oversized soft cashmere-viscose-wool bias-cut Italian-knit black sweater has made-in-France hand-sewn-sequin trim on both sides like tuxedo pants. With V-shaped rolled hems that extend to thigh length, the pullover has a likewise distinct ribbed neckline that can be zipped at an angle into a turtleneck, if not left entirely open to reveal the left collarbone. The asymmetrically constructed fine knit features shiny black-sequined wide trim in front of the slightly V-shaped seams of the shorter left-side torso that is waist length. The draping side trim meets the angled neck zipper at the left raglan-sleeve seam, then loops around the bottom of the ribbed standing collar. The sequined trim ends where an apple motif drapes over the left shoulder like a wrapped narrow scarf to partly conceal the zipper. Enabling the sparkly sequins to otherwise dangle down the back, the cartoonish colorful apple is generously double-sided with red, green and copper sequins representing fruit, leaves and stem. Notably, Castelbajac depicted apples in multiple collections over decades. The large high-quality sequins remain in excellent condition with no pulled threads or missing pieces. After shipping, the buyer may need to realign sequins in one direction as they can flip if the knit is folded. We did so upon acquiring it, which did not loosen any of the expertly-sewn sequins. The "JC de Castelbajac" labeled sweater can be worn by a wide variety of adult sizes with female French-size 44 intended to be the max. With the zipper closed, the length from the top of the turtleneck to the point of a V-shaped sleeve is 36 inches. Comparatively, 30 inches is the length from the front center of the turtleneck to the center of the draped asymmetrical V-shaped hem. Notably, unzipping the collar so that it folds over does not distort the hemline. While the raglan sleeves negate shoulder seams, the right underarm seam to the hem of this longer side measures 18 inches, which is why the long-short hem that differs by 12 inches can suit a U.S.-size 2 to 12. A small-sized buyer will have sleeves that are longer then usual only where they end in a point.

MartinMargiela 1990s MissDeannaKnit GoldLurexThreaded FauxDipDyed Ombre Pullover
By Maison Martin Margiela
Located in Chicago, IL
When Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela debuted gold-Lurex knits while French luxury-goods Hermes Womenswear Artistic Director, simultaneously in Fall 1999, he introduced at his eponymous Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela a collection featuring 1970s-inspired Lurex-accented sweaters, along with oversized loose clothes intended for either women or men. Including a distinct black-printed white-folded tag stitched into a seam by Italian experimental knitter Miss Deanna, who created many memorable knits under Margiela's artistic direction, this Margiela sparkly finely-knit viscose-and-Lurex-blend long-sleeve pullover is a minimalist unisex design with narrow ribbed trim at the crewneck, wrists and hem. Its "Made In Italy" size 44 with a 15.5-inch shoulderline is without darts and drapes like a one-size-fits-most stretch T-shirt. The lightweight sweater was knit from pale-gold, grey and blue yarns into an ombre pattern like a dip-dye technique associated with fabric. Yet the additional glittery orange-tone metallic thread (difficult to photograph due to reflections) interspersed throughout was clearly not dyed or printed. Conversely, Margiela's Fall 1999 Artisanale Line 0 collection that was produced instead by his Parisian team explored the textural effects of hand-painting fabrics, such as the unisex T-shirts that were striped or obscured with thick silver paint. Earlier in the 1990s, Margiela had reproduced some vintage...
