About the Item

The sculptors of Burma have created a sacred, profane art of incomparable beauty and wealth. Subjected to strict canons, the statuary of religious inspiration is nonetheless imprinted with a deep sense of spirituality and grandeur. Standing Buddha is here, presented in the gesture of "Openness to the world" or "blessing", the left arm holding an outer panel of the garment while the right hand holds a fruit (here missing). He is dressed in the traditional monastic cloak, made of a large draped piece enclosing both shoulders and embellished with a piece of fabric falling in supple pleats bordered with gold-plated stripes from the left shoulder on the front and back. The lower part of the body covered with a skirt, the Antaravasaka, is revealed behind the edges of the mantel. The hairstyle made of small regular loops releases the high forehead and ears to the elongated auricular lobes which are divine perfections attributed to the Buddha. The pure oval face five the refined features: Arched eyebrow arches meet to form the edge of the nose with delicate design. The eyes, very stretched with half-closed eyelids lowered on the inner contemplation, full cheeks and mouth with full lips, add to the expression of well-being of this Buddha. Exceptional piece of quality, beauty and universality. Timeless, this representation of the Master is enveloped in an aura of mystery that gives it a singular presence.
