19th Century Huanghuali Chinese Opium Scale

About the Item

Beautifully carved scale box from the much desired Huanghuali wood. These scales were originally used to weigh herbs, medicines, and precious metals, but are known as opium scales, for which they were undoubtedly also used. The scale is housed in a hand-crafted sliding box, which was carved from Huanghuali wood. In the perfectly carved niches contains a brass dish, a brass counterweight and a balance stick made of bone with detailed marking for weight calculations.
