Elegant and beautiful Dressing Table or it could be suitable for a jewellery box , Meiji Period ( 1868 - 1912 ). Executed with black lacquer, holding a bronze hand mirror ( ekagami) Configured with five smooth-running drawers of different Size. Two are equipped with slender "hirute"-shaped bail handles and three with decorative pull-rings. The front-and backside featuring oval grips for easy transport. Surmounted by a mirror frame in a shape reminiscent of a Shintô shrine torii-gate- a twin-posted framework with a triangular crossbar flared in upswept Chinese-style gable ( Karahafu) endings. Resting of the frame is the Japanese traditional handheld mirror with auspicious embossed design of wisteria ( fuji) and lovely patina. Inscription on the right. Outstanding and really gorgous mirror made by a French master craftsman, following the extraordinary mirrors Louis XIV (1643 – 1715). Made of finely carved , gilded and silver wood with an aged effect. Body with a quadrangular profile and an exuberant forelock at the top. These two parts present the typical elements of Louis XIV mirrors. The main body presents a double corridor, the interior with smaller mirrors. In addition, ornaments in the corners and half of each side that enhance its shape. In the upper part, a large crest develops, which presents in its central area the cup of abundance, framed by a multitude of rockeries that create a kind of ephemeral architecture. One of the most vivid small Thangkas I have ever owned. Purchased from a wealthy Mongolian collector along with 3 other fine small Thangkas in the 1990's from his very best personal pieces as a thank you for a long friendship. Painted thangka is 6.75 x 9 inches, frame is 13 x 15 1/8 inches. Custom mat and frame, with museum glass and silk matting. Exquisite. Not inexpensive for a small Thangka, but you won't find better. Probably early to mid 20th century (in reality many of the Mongolian Thangkas sold in the west as 19thC are early 20thC, as the environment there causes cloth and paper to usually soil, darken and degrade. The number of truly early Thangkas that are bright and clean are very few. Even most of the early/mid 20th Cones show great wear and soiling. This one almost sure lived all of its life in a large Gau box or in a drawer or trunk, as the colors look as bright as the day it was painted. This fine vintage painted work is richly filled with small figures surrounding a large central figure. All interspersed with clouds and religious symbols. The colors are deep but muted with time and age. The piece is newly bordered in rich Chinese silks edges in three strong colors setting the piece of nicely and making a strong impression. The Thangka is framed overall in a gilded simple frame.
