About the Item

A superb example of an ancient Chinese pottery camel, among the most iconic of all ancient Chinese ceramics, dating to the early to mid Tang Dynasty, around 706 - 755 AD. A wonderfully vibrant depiction, the camel is shown standing upon a rectangular base, raising its head to bray. With wide eyes and exposed teeth, the entire piece exudes a sense of life and motion. Decorated throughout with a thick amber glaze, which shines almost golden in the light. Here we can see the true essence of the Tang style, the artist has masterfully captured the inner spirit of the animal, and one can truly feel a sense of personality emerging from the fabric of the piece. The kilns of the Tang Dynasty broke free from earlier traditions, employing rich, vibrant glazes. Whether this reflected a change in fashion or technology is not known, however, Tang glazes are some of the most admired of the entire ancient world. The artistic splendour of the Tang Dynasty was made possible by its vast wealth, built on trade along the great Silk Route, between China and the cities of the distant west. Bactrian camels such as the creature depicted here travelled along the treacherous deserts of the Silk Route, laden with goods. It was during the Tang Dynasty that trade between east and west reached its golden age, and the Chinese empire welcomed foreign cultures from all across the known world. Above all, it was these hardy camels that came to symbolise the prosperity of the Silk Route, and by extension the Chinese civilisation itself. Encapsulated in this stunning piece is a microcosm of the Tang Dynasty; its wealth, cosmopolitanism and artistic vibrancy. Provenance: Ex. US private collection, acquired years ago at auction by the previous owner. This piece has been TL (thermoluminescence) tested by Oxford Authentication as authentic. A copy version of that test can be provided to the new owner, upon request.
