Large Thai Ban Chiang Painted Pottery Vessel, Late Period, circa 300 BC
About the Item
A massive Ban Chiang culture painted pottery vessel, circa 300 BC, Thailand.
The large storage jar painted with a bold spiral pattern in red ochre on a buff ground. The spiraling patterns taking up most of the body of the vessel are reminiscent of a mammary form. The wide, tall neck and everted mouth decorated with anthropomorphic or zoomorphic forms.
The vessel would originally have had a separate pottery pedestal to support the rounded base. Now it is supported by a simple woven grass donut.
The Ban Chiang culture was a Bronze Age culture centered along the waterways of Northern Thailand, Udon Thani province. They are known for their rich material culture of bronze grave goods and painted pottery objects.
