About the Item

The glass cabinet - Restauro #1 (Restoration #1) is an antique Brazilian walnut cabinet restored with glass panels and shelf, antique looking brass handles and bright yellow steel base, in which are two 3D printed small statues. Since this a design intervention in an antique piece of furniture, this cabinet is unique. The glass cabinet Restauro (Restoration) #1 is part of the small collection from the Projeto Restauro. Projeto Restauro (The Restoration Project): This project intends to bring a new perspective to Brazilian furniture design by poking at the very notion of Brazilian cultural identity - or the so called "brazilianness". The Restoration consist on identifying narratives and discourses about Brazilian culture and identity throughout the furniture design field just to take them to further questioning. Such operation exposes what traces were included into the official narrative and the ones excluded. And it's on the realm of exclusion that the project thrives and collects the features for questioning, at the same time, both the naturalized Brazilian culture and identity and their replication in the furniture design field. Restauro #1: In this first phase we pointed at the naturalization of slavery in Brazil, dating back centuries ago. This feature of our society has informed the whole world through paintings, photographs and images in general. Eventually these images would come back to Brazil as a representation of a peaceful and idyllic society. History and sociology, however, shows us something totally different. In order to start the debate, we took a photograph of an enslaved black woman with a white child on her back and 3D printed a small statue of her. After buying broken colonial furniture from antique dealers and replacing its missing parts with rationalist modern forms, we placed the woman. This single action interferes with the furniture and creates an expected feature that draws the attention to the details. This feature replaces the willfully forgotten bodies and people into the Brazilian culture's narrative and simultaneously into Brazilian design. This is the way we found, so far, to use furniture design as a critical means.
