CHINESE PAN SHAN POTTERY JAR- LARGE SCALE
About the Item
NEOLITHIC PERIOD, MACHANG PHASE, CA. 2000 B.C.
Of ovoid form, the upper section painted with four rudimentary figures with splayed limbs, in brown edged in cream, all reserved on a pale brown ground above a scalloped border, the widest point of the jar applied with two loop handles, with a short waisted neck.
The highly stylized anthropomorphic designs seen on this jar are characteristic of pottery from the Banshan and early Machang phases of the Majiayao culture, made in the northwest of China in the second half of the 3rd millennium B.C. Compare a jar from the Wannieck collection, Paris, and another in the Royal Ontario Museum of Archaeology, both illustrated in line drawings in Nils Palmgren, Kansu Mortuary Urns of the Pan Shan and Ma Chang Group, Peiping, 1934, p.188, figs.214 and 215, and another acquired in Gansu, ibid., pl.XIII, fig.2, all probably slightly earlier than the present piece.
