Chinese Dian Culture Large Gold Cuff, circa 2nd Century BC, Southern China

About the Item

A large and impressive solid high karat gold cuff from the Dian Kingdom, circa 2nd century BC, modern day Yunnan Province, China. . This striking cuff is crafted from hand hammered high karat gold (20-22-karat). Of tapered design, the cuff covers a good portion of the forearm when worn. Simplistic in design, the bright gold unworked save for a few high ridges. Though over two thousand years old, the large scale, simple lines and clean design look surprisingly contemporary. Existing alongside the Chinese Warring States and early Han Dynasty, the Dian Kingdom, located in present day Yunnan Province, was a major trading hub between China and Southeast Asia. Renowned for their metal working abilities, Dian Culture artifacts display a fascinating combination of Han Chinese, Dong Son, and Scythian influences. Exhibited at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art, Chicago, IL, 2017-2019.
