Japanese antique wabisabi wooden box/1800-1912/From the late Edo to the Meiji

About the Item

It is a wooden box made from the late Edo period to the Meiji period in Japan. The material is cedar wood. Cedar is a tree that has been commonly used for Japanese tools and furniture since ancient times. The wood grain inside the box is very beautiful. The wood grain on the lid is very beautiful. In addition, the whole is blackened by soot from the hearth for a long time. It is a cool wooden box that feels very wabi-sabi. There is one knot hole in the lid. When you open the lid, there are letters written on the inside of the wooden box. This is a very famous Japanese tanka written in hiragana called ``Irohanihoheto''. This is a tanka that every Japanese person has heard. This is a tanka poem created around the 10th to 11th century. The meaning is ``Flowers will eventually fall (people will also die). In a world that is constantly changing and changing, if you overcome your doubts, you will no longer dream or get drunk.'' This is considered to be a tanka created from Buddhist thought. I don't know why this wooden box has such a tanka written on it. However, this wooden box is filled with hiragana, characters that symbolize Japan. It is rare to come across such a wooden box. It can be said that it is a rare item that is hard to find even if you look for it.
