This wooden work board is said to have been made in northern Kanto around the Meiji to Taisho eras (1868-1920). A practical tool used in Japanese private homes at that time to knead rice cakes and make udon noodles has gained an antique shine over time, and is now an item with an artistic presence. The material used for this board is chestnut wood, which is hard and durable, yet has beautiful grain. What is particularly noteworthy is that it is a single board cut from that large tree. Such a large chestnut board is extremely valuable, and the grain of this board is particularly flowing and free and beautiful. This board has been used for many years, and the center has become white with the flour of mochi and udon noodles, while the edges have changed to a darker color over time.
