Japanese Red Lacquered Folding Meditation Armchair for Monks , golden

About the Item

One of a kind kyokuroku, the name given to this type of folding meditation chairs for monks. Made of wood, it is lacquered in red with a glossy nashiji finish and decorated with golden hardware decorated with different types of plant elements, such as chrysanthemum flowers and spiral vines, as well as an embossed design of 'pearl-hunting dragons'. The seat is made of black leather and the footrest is also foldable. The backrest is in the shape of a horseshoe and the structure of the chair is specially designed to sit cross-legged. Meditation is an essential part of Buddhist spirituality throughout the Eastern world, and the Buddhist world has different elements that give meaning and shape to the experience of meditation. One of these elements is the Kyokuroku, used exclusively by Buddhist monks in temples. Buddhism is a non-theistic philosophical and spiritual doctrine, whose ultimate goal is to achieve "enlightenment." It arose in India in the 5th century B.C. and soon spread throughout much of Asia, although it did not reach Japan until the 5th century A.D., and is still one of two state religions today (Shinto is the remaining). It is made up of the body of teachings of Siddharta Gautama, who would later become a Buddha. Through meditation and prayer, the "I" is abandoned, considered the origin of the suffering inherent in life. It is divided into "sects" or schools, such as tantric, zen... In short, Buddhism has marked many aspects of its society in Japan: culture, art, philosophy, and even its character. The Period or the Showa Era (1926-1989) was the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Showa, known as the "period of enlightened peace" and characterized by Western influence in the cultural aspect. Elegant and beautiful Dressing Table or it could be suitable for a jewellery box , Meiji Period ( 1868 - 1912 ). Executed with black lacquer, holding a bronze hand mirror ( ekagami) Configured with five smooth-running drawers of different Size. Two are equipped with slender "hirute"-shaped bail handles and three with decorative pull-rings. The front-and backside featuring oval grips for easy transport. Surmounted by a mirror frame in a shape reminiscent of a Shintô shrine torii-gate- a twin-posted framework with a triangular crossbar flared in upswept Chinese-style gable ( Karahafu) endings. Resting of the frame is the Japanese traditional handheld mirror with auspicious embossed design of wisteria ( fuji) and lovely patina. Inscription on the right.
