A Khmer Sandstone Bust of the Buddha
About the Item
The face, carved in a realistic manner typical of the Bayon period, can possibly be considered a pseudo-portrait of King Jayavarman VII, the great protector and patron of Buddhism. The downcast and closed eyes, and a slight smile upon the lips lend a sense of deep serenity and humble piousness to this sculpture.
A conical and stepped mukuta carved with lotus petals rises from the top of his head to cover the cranial protuberance. The slightly arching halo around his head indicates he may have once been protected by a naga.
