About the Item

Laos, 16th-18th century Bronze Measures: H 96 cm Provenance: Private German collection, of a noble family since the 1950s. Private German collection Stuttgart, circa 2000 French private collection 2008 Seated upright in half lotus, on a simple plinth inscribed and probably dated, the Buddha is in bhumiparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness his enlightenment during subduing Mara. The elegant bronze is cast with well-balanced proportions and crisp lines for the robe and facial features. Eyes and jewel in the left hand are inlaid with glass. This Buddha figure is showing strong influences of Lan Na Style, obviously taking part of the mixed Lan Na Type of 16th century and later, that can be seen as a continuation of earlier and standard Lan Na tradition, but he is also showing some details from Sukkothai style (like the slimmer body, the robe's hem draping terminating by the navel) The facial features are typically Lao, his small bow-shaped smile with outlined lips, the long arched eyebrows in relief, also the elongated shape of the eyes, the short nose, are particular of Lao Buddha sculptures, also the very supple features of fingers. Historical context: The history and religion of northern Thailand and Laos are very intertwined. The founder of Thai Lan Na region, King Mangrai, took Ventiane under his rule in 13th century. Half a century later, the Thai exile, Fa Ngum, broke away and established the Lao Kingdom, credited with bringing the Singhalese Buddhism adopted in Northern Thailand at that time in Laos. Lao Buddhist sculptures borrowed heavily from the northern Thai styles produced at centers of production like Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen. Also, like our Buddha, Lao sculptures are showing stylistic features common to both cultures.
