About the Item

This monumental Chinese screen comes from an important Shanxi Province Estate. Originally, this screen would have been placed opposite the entrance to the courtyard or main reception hall. According to Chinese folk belief, evil spirits could walk around corners, thus, blocking the straight path through the door with a standing screen would keep them out. Nowadays, the ways to use this screen are slightly different but even more diverse. Its substantial size makes it a great object for interior decoration; it allows you to create private areas, a room within a room or simply a place very impressive eye catcher. This screen is constructed from two pieces; a beautifully decorated panel and a base with tall spandrels to slip the panel in. The base is a sturdy construction to support the heavy panel frame, decorated with nicely carved roundels where the spandrels meet the feet. The base retains its original brownish-black lacquer and has three inset panels in red and black. Parts of the base have been re-lacquered at some point in the past, not an unusual feature in antique Shanxi furniture and adding to its character. The panel has two sides, both with beautiful gild decoration. The black lacquer side is more regal, depicting Chinese calligraphy in golden letters on a black background, with a dragon-and-shou-medallion in the middle. The small top and bottom panes show stylized dragons with a shou-symbol between them on red ground. The red lacquer side depicts a scene from a Chinese tale, depicting landscape scenery with a pagoda, several people and two flying cranes. Like the black side, the top and bottom panes show stylized dragons with a shou between them on red ground. This piece has been well looked after and remains in great condition. It is unique feature in any room and offers a fantastic opportunity to create an outstanding space. Provenance: From the property of a German doctor.
