Chinese Famille Rose Hat Stand Vase with Scholar's Treasures, c. 1850

About the Item

This porcelain hat stand is decorated in a style of overglaze enameling known as "famille rose." Sometimes referred to as "yangcai" or "foreign colors," the famille rose style emerged during the 18th century and employs a pastel palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favors roses and pinks. Adorned with the prized collection of a Qing-dynasty scholar, the hat stand is decorated with an array of treasured items. Beautifully painted with a skilled hand, the porcelain vase celebrates the springtime with a lush peony blossom, nestled amidst an assortment of precious objects, including censers, books, vases, and a scholars' rock. Outlined with gold paint for a gilded finish, the hat stand delights with an abundance of color and pattern. Traditionally used to display a man's cap while not in use, antique hat stands are ideal today as cylindrical vases for flowers or greenery.
