Japanese Asian Ceramic Wall Plaque Painting Utagawa Kuniyoshi Subduing Whale

About the Item

A truly wonderful and eye-catching large framed glazed ceramic art wall relief/plaque based on master Japanese artist/printmaker Utagawa Kuniyoshi's famous Ukiyo-e triptych (three-piece painting) artwork/woodblock print "Subding the Whale" ( also known as "Miyamoto Musashi and the Whale Off the Coast of Hizen" or "Miyamoto no Musashi attacking the Giant Whale") which depicts an Edo period swordsman/samurai, Miyamoto Musashi battling a large whale in rough seas. The image and corresponding story of Musashi's bravery and valor have now become one of Japan's most popular tales. While the warrior is real, the story has few written sources confirming the event, but the tale of this fight has inspired many subsequent stories and artworks. This work is done in three distinct sections like the original artwork. It is hand-painted and mounted in a large, heavy metal frame. A very special piece as we can not find another like it. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ceramic collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
