Japanese Porcelain Plate or Dish Hand Painted, Edo Period, circa 1840
About the Item
This is a good quality Japanese porcelain plate or dish, which we date to the Edo period, circa 1840.
The plate is beautifully hand decorated with varying shades of under-glaze cobalt blue, then hand enameled with blue, green, red and burnt orange, with much bold gold gilding detail. The central pattern depicts a flowering plant with buds and leaves growing from a rocky outcrop, with a willow tree and fence, all within a continuous inner blue circle. The outer rim has a six part border with geometric and floral motifs. The reverse is decorated with two sets of floral sprigs.
The outer rim is also gilded.
We date this plate to the Edo period, circa 1840.
The plate is unmarked to the base.
