About the Item

A wonderfully shaped gorgeously iron glazed stoneware Shigaraki tsubo jar vase - truly a stunning and unique work. The natural, organic glaze and tactile textures radiate in the light. We have not seen another with this glaze and pattern. This is a rare and unique glaze that happens by chance in the kiln. Aesthetically exquisite. The texture of the clay and natural glaze exemplifies the quality of Wabi-Sabi (the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, transient, impermanent, and incomplete in nature) that is so revered and coveted in Japan. Shigaraki Ware pottery comes from Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The kiln there is one of six ancient kilns in Japan (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Bizen ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware). This piece dates back to the Edo Period. The fact that it is glazed indicates that it was made in the early Edo period or later. Based on the mouth and shape, likely from the 17th century to the first half of the 18th century. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ceramics collection or an eye-catching Stand-out accent piece in about any setting. Truly a crown jewel. Comes with a protective wood box (The photo attached to the box says Koseto (Old Seto ware), but the entire jar displays white silica stone which is something that can only be found in Sigaraki ware). Condition:
In very good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use and some light organic cracking - quite natural with pieces of this age (please see photos). But no serious flaws. A spectacular or rivetting work overall. A personal favorite.
