This large antique charger (18 inches in diameter) is a showpiece of Japanese decorative art.
Made in the late 19th-century Meiji period, the intricate hand-painted design shows a delightful depiction of children at play in the snow, a charming waterside scene, and a bird-and-flower motif set on a striking red background.
The clever use of decoration showcases the transition of the seasons from winter to spring.
Adding to the allure of this bowl is a beautifully rendered songbird as it is drawn to a large tree bursting with plum flowers. Turning the bowl over reveals the back, where three robust dragons circle the foot, adding an extra touch of mythical charm.
