About the Item

Unique extremely intricately gilded and hand-painted large contemporary decorative Porcelain vase in brilliant red, cobalt blue and gold. Featuring the auspicious “koi fish” motif, a signed masterpiece from the signature collection by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of southern Japan and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional application of gold and platinum on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain – a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The vase showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns created by finely drawn lines of gold to showcase an amazing waterfall on the upper part and fish scale pattern on the lower half of this striking piece. This produces a stunning dream-like illusion of a “transparent” canvas. It showcases different hues of blue as the background for the intricate gold drawings on which fully articulated koi fish appear to be floating. To add to the elegance of the whole piece, the base and neck are decorated in a rich palette of deep green, red and black, enhanced by the generous use of gold. An intricate pattern surrounds the artist’s sign decorating even the bottom of this mesmerizing decorative vase. “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. This large signature gilded vase comes in a custom-made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12.75 in D 12 in.
