Pair of Dishes from Hatcher Collection Decorated with Horses

About the Item

Pair of Dishes decorated with a white horse on a background of blue spirals, 17th century. These dishes were part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China sea in approximately 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984, which we attended. Most of these pieces were tableware in the Dutch taste, known as "Kraak" porcelain, but we decided to focus on the Transitional ware pieces, which reflected more purely Chinese taste and to select the most rare and unique porcelain. The Transitional period, which took place between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and which ran from the beginning of the 17th century until approximately 1660, marked a shift in Chinese ceramic styles as the pieces became more original, poetic, and more freely drawn than those made in the official kilns. These lovely and unusual dishes have scalloped edges and inner and outer decor of tightly drawn spirals and flowers, with a white horse galloping across the center. While the long sojourn in sea water has softened the shine of the glaze of these dishes, they remain a vivid cobalt blue. The delicacy of the drawing and motif make these pieces stand out. The dishes are in excellent condition, without any visible chips or cracks. The price listed is for the pair, but we would consider selling them individually for $1,250 each.
