Pale Glazed Chinese Koi Bowl, C. 1850
About the Item
This 19th-century porcelain bowl has a delicate, tapered form, finely potted with a short footed base and thin walls that flare slightly at the lip. The interior is decorated in low relief with a koi amidst crashing waves, a symbol of harmony, wealth, and luck. A pale glaze coats the dish on all sides, appearing a warm creme on the sides but celadon-blue where it gathers at the bottom. The translucent glaze has aged beautifully with time, textured with imperfections, iron oxidation, and fine crazing.

- Chinese Famille Rose Bowl with Floral Arrangements, c. 1920Located in Chicago, ILDuring the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes. Dated to the early 20th century, this large porcelain bowl is a wonderful example of the intricate painted linework characteristic of famille rose ware. The base of the bowl features an arrangement of precious scholars' objects and auspicious symbols, including a ruyi scepter, a handscroll, and rhinoceros horns...Category
