Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Set of two decorative blue bottles in ceramic with gold lusters decorations (realized by Bottega Gatti in Faenza) from the Bottiglie Abitate series which is designed by Gio Ponti in the 1950s and manufactured during the 1990s by Cooperativa Ceramica Imola. Dimensions: A buttoned bottle H36 cm A decorated bottle H30 cm Gio Ponti was an icon of the modernist movement: the Italian designer, architect, artist and publisher contributed significantly to the worlds of architecture and design with his extensive work in fine furniture and ceramics, education, office and residential buildings, and everything in between. Giovanni, known as Gio Ponti was born in 1891 in Milan. It was there that he spent his childhood, and in 1921 he began to study architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. From 1923 to 1930 he served as the artistic director of the Richard-Ginori porcelain factory. In 1927, Ponti started his first architectural office, together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he started the magazine Domus, which is still regarded as one of the most influential European magazines for architecture and design. He was also very influential during the period as a curator of the Milan Triennale. After his collaboration with Emilio Lancia had come to an end, upon completion of the Torre Rasini, he began to work as an architect together with the engineers Antonio Fornaroli and Eugenio Soncini...

Modern Japanese Ceramic Shigaraki Ikebana Vase Takahashi Shunsai
Located in Atlanta, GA
A tall ceramic vase made in the tradition of Shigaraki ware by Japanese potter Takahashi Shunsai (1927-2011), the fourth heir of the famed Rakusai lineage of potters. The vase is heavily potted in the reddish sandy Shigaraki clay. It has a Classic vase form made for Ikebana display. The surface is thickly draped with natural ash glaze that deposited onto the body during the firing process in the kiln. It also features decoration of carved lines. Nuggets of feldspar were incorporated in the clay and exposed onto the surface as crystal like jewels. Substantial and archaic looking, the vase also has a strong modern appeal due to its Mingei styling. It was signed on the base with a pressed seal Shunsai as shown. The vase comes with its original wood storage box (tomobako) with bears the title and signature in Kanji and a seal. It also retains a paperwork noting the artist's biography and practice philosophy in Japanese. Born in Shigaraki, Shunsai was the second son of renowned potter Takahashi Rakusai...

Large Korean Contemporary Buncheong Square Form Vase by Sung Jae Choi
By Sung Jae Choi
Located in Atlanta, GA
An impressive and large ceramic vessel titled "Meditation-Staying VI" by South Korean artist Sung-Jae Choi (b. 1962) circa 1994. The square form vase was heavily potted with a substantial weight that matches its form. It was created in the tradition of Buncheong ware. The surface is covered in a white slip glaze onto which the artist painted a spontaneous aqua scenery with his fingers. With just a few quick strokes, one can easily see ducks floating on the pond with willows swaying and reeds rustling in the wind. Rooted in strong ceramic tradition of Buncheong ware of 14-16th century, Choi revitalized the technique to reach for a modernity that is both refined and rustic, while still retaining a strong sense of poetry and humbleness. The piece is singed on the base as shown. Reference: for a similar piece see accession no. FE.57-2008 in the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum. Also 2005.90 in the Art Institute of Chicago. About the artist: Choi received is BFA and MFA from Hongik Art University in Seoul, Korea in Ceramic Art. He is currently a professor in the Department of Traditional Art and Craft at Korea National University of Cultural Heritage. Choi works in the Buncheong Korean ceramics tradition, showing internationally throughout Korea, Japan, Italy, France, Taiwan, Ireland, and the United States. He has traveled throughout the world via teaching, workshop, and residency positions such as Visiting Professor of Jingdezhen Ceramic University (Jingdezhen, China) in 2015 and Guest Professor of Alfred University (Alfred, NY) in 2006. Artist's statement: The expression of my Buncheong ceramics...
