Tatsuzo Shimaoka Signed Japanese Henko Rope Inlay Pottery Ceramic Vase with Box
About the Item
A wonderfully designed, gorgeously glazed, and highly coveted press-molded square Mingei Henko vase by Japanese National Treasure and Mashiko pottery master Tatsuzo Shimaoka. This work displays his famous Jomon Zogan rope inlay design and hand-painted decoration. The rich glaze radiates in the light. One of the best pieces of his work we have come across recently.
The vase is signed by Shimaoka with his "Ta" signature/mark on the base and also comes with a signed and sealed original box ( a more high-grade box which suggests he thought this piece was quite special).
The work is exquisite in every way and has a wonderful feel and heft to it. Would be sure to stand out in any Japanese art or pottery collection or be an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
Shimaoka, who started as an apprentice to famed Japanese potter Shoji Hamada in 1946 before opening his pottery studio, has exhibited worldwide including in North America, Asia, and Europe. In 1996 he was bestowed the title of Japanese Living Treasure by the Japanese government. In 1999 he was awarded The Order of the Rising Sun. His work can be found in many international museums and collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among others.
