19th Century Chinese Carved Wood Robe Rack
About the Item
This large Chinese oxblood colored lacquered robe rack is carved from Northern Elm (yumu) and is from the Shanxi Province of China. These robe racks were design to drape the ornate silk robes over the top of the racks and typically they were kept in the sleeping quarters of the traditional Chinese homes. This double wide style rack is finely carved with dragons (symbolizing strength and luck) adorning both ends and decorated with carved deer (symbolizing longevity and riches), oxen (symbolizing diligence, strength, honesty, down-to-earth persistence, and wealth) and birds (symbolizing feminine beauty and virtue) motifs. This rack is finely crafted with tradition Chinese mortise and tendon joinery.
