About
18th and 19th Century Chinese root wood art chairs and table set
The set consists of two chairs and a table. These groupings were often given as gifts. Root wood carving and polishing is a traditional Chinese art form.
These groupings consisted of two chairs and a table as only one chair would have been considered cheap. One chair and the table are made from Huanghuali root wood. Something must have happened to the second chair. The replacement was expertly matched to the original 2-pieces and only noticeable to a trained eye. The darker chair is probably made from elm root wood and was made at a later date during the 19th century. The arms of the chairs are softly rounded and worn. They are surprisingly comfortable.
