1930s Art Deco Shanghai Coffee Table Made of Varnished Elm with Quadripod Base

About the Item

This unusual round coffee table is made of varnished elm and was carved in Shanghai in an uncommon Art Deco style. The circular top is made of two elm planks and varnished with a warm red lacquer. The table is raised on four legs with delicate column insets, connected to one another with a cross stretcher adorned in its center with a medallion, perhaps placed there to receive a decorative item. The general roundness of this Art Deco Chinese table, circa 1930 would make it a sophisticated and unusual item a most elegant decoration. Thanks to its convenient dimensions, it would be a splendid side table or coffee table, perhaps in a den.

An antique Chinese Qing Dynasty period elm wood coffee table from the early 20th century, with hand-woven rattan top inset, square legs, open apron and pillar strut motifs. Created in China during the late Qing Dynasty period, this coffee table was originally made from a cut down Lohan bed, also called an opium smokers' bed. The table showcases a rectangular top with hand-woven rattan inset and slightly tapering edges, sitting above an open apron accented with a regular rhythm of pillar strut style motifs. It is raised on four sturdy square-shaped legs giving great stability to the ensemble. The design is the same on all sides, the table will be able to float in a room and be seen from all angles.
