About the Item

19th century Anglo-Chinese carved teak and inlaid stand, circa 1880 From the China Trade, clipper ship, period. Very in vogue and exotic decor popular in Europe and America in the late 19th century. Ornately carved and inlaid decoration. Boxwood and bone inlays on the top and legs. A "tour de force" Chinese pavilion surrounded with dragons and birds cover the serpentine top. A light and highly decorated serpentine apron floats below the top edge. Some losses and shrinkage to the carving and inlays.

Condition:

Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. The top has old shrinkage, now stable, solid with small pinpoint ares of loss to the inlays due to shrinkage. The central carved support in the form of a dragon has some losses too. The pedestal support and legs have an old crusty unrestored finish.
