19th Century Chinese Hongmu Side Table finely carved, Qing circa 1870
About the Item
This is a Chinese handmade Hongmu hardwood side table with a finely carved frieze, dating to the second half of the 19th century, Qing period.
The table has a mitred inset figured rectangular top with a raised beeded surround, over a very well hand carved freeze supported on four carved legs sat on ball feet. The freeze sections are crisply pierced carved on all four sides and depict trailing grape vines. The legs are strengthened by four shaped lower cross stretchers or rails with mitred joints, one of which is a replacement rail.
The table has developed a lovely deep color and patination from years of use and polishing.
