Antique Korean Scholar Book Bandaji Chest Joseon Dynasty
About the Item
A small Korean drop-front chest (Bandaji) made from zelkova wood (Korean Elm) with iron hardware fittings circa early to mid-19th century (Joseon period). Possibly from Chungcheong Do, located in the central west of Korean peninsula, this Bandaji of a relatively small scale was made specifically to store books and manuscripts in men's study. It was therefore known as a Ch'aek-Sang (book Bandaji). The chest features a top plank with overhang, a feature that is often found in scholar's desk, which is to facilitate the viewing of the scroll or manuscript. Above the main Bandaji compartment, there are three small drawers each with pull. The chest
is supported on carved curvy legs with apron, a style called Madae in Korean. The iron fittings on the front are sparse and minimal in keep with the ideal of humbleness of the Confucius society, yet they still showcase a quiet intricacy with symbolism. Note that the two hinges flanking the center medallion lock plate are in the shape of bat with open wings, a lovely detail on a humble piece. Bat is the symbol of "Fortunate" and "Luck" in Korean culture.
The wood was stained quite dark, but the grains of elm wood are still discernible in places. The piece shows off extensive wear and patina indicating its age and history. The interior retains some residues of old paper lining.
Compare to a book Bandaji with similar design in the collection Weisman Art Musuem Object number 1987.22.42. Illustrated on plate 137 on page 103 of the book "Traditional Korean Furniture" by Wright and Pai.
