Chinese Kang Table with Ridged Legs, c. 1800
About the Item
This 19th-century hardwood kang table was traditionally used as a convenient working surface for painting, writing, sewing, or eating atop a heated kang platform. The petite table features a rectangular floating-panel top, straight legs and a simple apron decorated with brass inlay of trailing vines.
The legs and sides are uniquely decorated with ridged detailing meant to mimic the stacked construction of bamboo furniture, a motif sometimes referred to as "incense stick bundles.” The short corner legs end in hoof feet carved with cloud-form square spiral designs. Ideal today as a display stand or pedestal, the low kang table has a beautiful dark brown finish, textured with antique wear and a wonderful aged patina.
