Korean Low Lacquer Table with Elaborate Inlays
About the Item
A Korean black lacquered wood low table with elaborate inlay works circa late Joseon dynasty (late 19th century to turn of 20th century). The low table, supported by slightly curved legs was traditionally placed on the floor or bed. Like Soban, the low profile was meant to be used sitting down on the floor or matt. The table, in a larger rectangular form, was closer to the Chinese prototype known as Kang table, and possibly made for the export to the Japanese market. On the dark lacquered surface dusted very subtly with golden powder, there are strikingly elaborate inlay works of crushed Mother-of-Pearl, golden tortoise shell (or a material that mimics the shell, not tested) and twisted brass wires. The top panel showcases the motif of "Dragon and Phoenix Chasing Fire Pearl", an auspicious symbol often used in wedding ceremony. The mythological animals are surrounded with clouds formed by inlayed brass wire, all within a border of leafy flower scrolls. The aprons are also decorated with fine flower scrolls. It was likely made for that purpose as well as a luxurious item not for everyday use. It can be used as a showcase coffee table in a modern setting.
For a closely related table, see illustration no. 257 on page 331 of "Oriental Lacquer Art" (New York/Tokyo, 1972) by Lee Yu-kuan.
A similar table with different inlay motifs is in the collection of Victoria and Albert Musuem, FE. 34-1991. Illustrated on page 168 of "Korean Art and Design" by Beth Mckillop.

- Korean Medicine Chest with Drawers YakchangLocated in Atlanta, GAA Korean medicine or apothecary chest with curved leg support circa the first quarter of the 20th century. Known as Yakchang in Korea, the chest was used to sort and store herb medicines in its many small drawers. The prototype was originated in China, but this piece is distinctively Korean because of the classic style of the brass hardware. the configuration of the storage space in the lower part, the shape of the leg support and the wood paneling details. The upper part features thirty-six drawers with divided in six rows, each with a brass pull ring and two herb names in Hanja, carved and gilt. The lower part has a bi-door panels open to a storage compartment, which is flanked by four more drawers. Closer examination of the construction reveals that the frame and the drawers were made from Paulownia wood, which has an insect-repelling quality. The frame was painted and lacquered dark while the drawers remained natural. The front panels of the drawers and the doors were all made from Zelkova wood, showcasing its lovely linear dark grains. The interiors of the drawers are very clean and free of odor (have not been extensively used to store medicine).
